Soviet Union saved Europe and the world from Nazism and Fascism
The rise of Fascism and Nazism in Italy and Germany had threatened the world’s security on which peace in Europe and the world had been building decades after World War I. Especially with the arrival of World War II as a global military conflict, Fascist aspirations were increased. This conflict was rooted in the inter war period and the early stages of Word War II. There are many causes that ignite the sparks for the war such as the one that Adolf Hitler tried to overthrow the democracy introducing radical racially motivated revisions of the worlds order, but the most recognized one is the invasion of Poland. The end of the war was manifested with the annexation of Adolf Hitler by the Russians. During the war the Soviet Union and the United States emerged as leading powers that tried to save the world from Hitler’s painful spread of Nazi ideology.
The Nazi ideology attempted to connect the war of annihilation in the East against Communist and the Soviet Union together with the war of extinction against the Jewish people. Stalin along with Communist rule demanded that the war would be stopped with a negotiated peace with Germany. But, instead of that Germany attacked the Soviets. The world tried to involve practically every small state of Eastern Europe-their liberation from fascism and the restoration of their national sovereignty in 1944-45 had not removed their respective national-territorial claims vis-à-vis each other.
Manny attempts clearly show that the Russians were the main winners of the World War II. The Soviets repeatedly made attempts to create a system of regional and European security along with the efforts to create a strong alliance with the other countries. For Communists throughout the world the charge was to mobilize the people of all countries and organize an international unity to fight fascism and defend the Soviet Union and also to defend the freedoms and independence of all nations.
It is not disputable that the Western countries contributed towards the downfall of Nazi ideology during WWII. The Allied forces really help a lot in ending the war and cutting down the Nazi ideology, especially when Hitler’s overthrow the democracy. This worried France and United Kingdom, who already had great lost in the previous war such as the First World War and the interwar period. Also, Hitler’s overthrow of the democracy played a big role for fast intervention. But, the Allies were seen only as helping actors and passive observers. The Soviet Union was the one who had the leading role in saving the world. Starting the night on 16 January 1945 the Red army penetrated the German frontier. The Red Army gathered the last powers and tried to defeat the Nazis. Before the battle officially was over, the German dictator and its followers committed suicide.
Another aspect that should clearly state the winner of the WWII was that during the war Soviet Union lost most of its people and tried to set immigration policy, but the West did not allowed Jews and other nations to emigrate. This was the case before the Holocaust. Many people had been killed and tortured. For, example many of the Jews in Macedonia were denied asylum in Western Europe, and as a consequence 7000 of them were killed.
Taking into account the above mentioned facts it is clearly that the Soviet Union was the main contributor in defeating the Nazi. The Soviet Union contributed for the demise of the Nazi ideology and Hitler’s regimes.
But after the war the consequences were very big. The Soviet Union and the Allies tried to emerge as a leading power in the world. This led to a stage for the appearance of the Cold War which lasted the next 45 years. As Misha Glenny argues, Stalin was right; the Soviet Union could hardly have avoided war with the United States . The United States Government under President Truman initiated and sustained a vigorous drive to undercut the Stalin-Churchill agreement of October 1944, concerning Eastern Europe, and to replace it with the Open Door Policy. So, when Stalin demanded that Truman and Churchill deliver the anti-communist Russians to him after Germany’s surrender so that he could either murder them or send them to the Gulag, Truman and Churchill willingly complied. Is that what a partnership with evil to defeat evil is all about? The Balkan peninsula was now divided, one Russian part and one American. Crushing repression awaited one half, chaotic democracy and military dictatorship the other. However instead of promoting a peace and stability in the world, the Soviet Union was too much occupied with becoming a leading power. So, the Soviet Union was seen as an evil thing. One evil invoked another. As Misha Glenny states, after half a century of division and Clod war, people from East and West look forward to build “the common European home”.
